  • If you’re crazy about each other and your relationship is growing, plan simple “mini dates” leading up to a nice romantic night out on the 14th, which falls on a Saturday this year. Ideas include:
    • Wednesday – Take an evening stroll.
    • Thursday – Play your favorite board or video game together.
    • Friday – Watch a favorite movie.
    • Valentine’s Day Eve – Lovely dinner out at a new restaurant!

The history of Valentine’s Day

February 3 By American Greetings

The History of Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is the one day a year dedicated to all things love. But as all of the red and pink hearts and flowers begin to appear, it begs the question–how much do you really know about the history of Valentine’s Day?

Surprisingly, the origins of the holiday are a little unclear. Most people will agree the modern holiday arose from the religious observance of the Feast of St. Valentine. While February 14 is now celebrated around the world as a day of love, here are some little-known facts about the evolution of this love-filled day:

Connections to the Feast of St. Valentine

  • The mid-February date may have ties to the pagan festival, Luperchalia, during which there was a ceremony to bestow fertility on women. To counteract this, Pope Gilasius declared February 14 as the feast of St. Valentine in 498 A.D.
  • There were several Saint Valentines, but the one who stands out most is St. Valentine of Rome. He was a priest during the reign of Claudius II (who banned marriages in an effort to keep his army strong). St. Valentine is credited not only with secretly performing marriages until he was caught and sentenced to death, but upon his execution, supposedly passed a note to a love interest that was signed “from your Valentine.”
  • Early references to Valentine’s Day having romantic connotations appear in works by both Geoffrey Chaucer and William Shakespeare.

Traditions and Icons of Valentine’s Day

  • Cupid started out as the Greek god, Eros, who then became the bow and arrow-clad Roman god of love.
  • The tradition of personally exchanging valentines began in the 1700s. By the 1800s, when postal service became more affordable, mailing valentines (sometimes anonymously) became a more popular tradition.
  • The U.S. Greeting Card Association estimates that approximately 1 billion valentines are sent each year worldwide, making the day the second largest card-sending holiday of the year, behind Christmas.

International Observances of Valentine’s Day

  • Throughout most of South America, Día del Amor y la Amistad (or the Day of Love and Friendship) is observed by showing love toward romantic companions and doing acts of kindness for friends. A similar holiday called Ystävänpäivä (or Friend’s Day) is celebrated in Finland.
  • In Slovenia, Valentine’s Day marks the date to begin working the fields and vineyards again.
  • In Japan and Korea, it is customary for women to give chocolates to men on February 14. One month later, on March 14 (referred to as White Day), men are expected to reciprocate with their own gift.
  • Valentinsdag is celebrated in Denmark and Norway by sharing a romantic dinner and sending a card or red rose.

Continuing this centuries-old tradition simply reaffirms the importance of recognizing the love we share with friends and family. It might just be one day a year, but it is one that means so much to them to hear how you truly feel.

How do you celebrate Valentine’s Day? We’d love to hear your unique traditions!

Share the Love - Free Printable Valentine's Day Calendar

It’s not just the things that we say, but the things we do in the name of love that define its meaning. And luckily, Valentine’s Day offers us the perfect opportunity to do so—it’s the one day a year that reminds us to do all of the thoughtful and romantic things we should do every day.

Valentine’s Day is all about love and affection, but oftentimes we find that just one day is not enough to truly show the depth of our feelings. In order to keep those feelings of love and appreciation lasting the entire month of February, here are some tips to help you express your love.

To download our FREE, printable calendar with 14 days of fun romantic activities, click here!

No printer? No problem! Here are 14 ideas for ways to show your love as we head into Valentine’s Day:

  1. Cook their favorite restaurant meal: Try cooking your loved one’s favorite meal from a restaurant.
  2. Lipstick Kisses: Leave a lipstick kiss on the mirror, kitchen window, or any other any frequent traffic area where your love will see it and smile.
  3. Lunchbox or work bag note: Sneak a sweet note into their lunch or briefcase so that they will smile and think of you when they find it.
  4. Start a wish jar: Take a jar and write down all of the things you both have said you would like to do – seeing a play, having a picnic, or learning to play chess. From time to time, pull an item from the jar and enjoy the activity together.
  5. #TBT First date recreation: Throw it back to your first date, and share a special evening at the restaurant you had your first date.
  6. Double date: Schedule a double date with friends you don’t see often.
  7. Breakfast in bed: Make and bring them breakfast in bed.
  8. Romantic Movie Marathon: Watch some old romantic movies together.
  9. Fancy dessert night: Show special care by making fancy dessert that you’ve never attempted before.
  10. Surprise mid-day ecard: Send a flirty Valentine ecard during the day to offer an unexpected smile.
  11. Romantic Pizza date: Order pizza in, but light candles to add a special element of romance.
  12. #TBT Look through old photos: Watch your wedding video or look through photo albums together.
  13. Balloon surprise: set up red, pink, and white balloons in the living room overnight so when your loved ones start their day, they’re greeted with a loving surprise.
  14. Share your love: Valentine’s Day only comes once a year. The easiest way to share your love year-round, is to tell someone that you love them every single day.

February Birthday Fun Facts

Happy birthday, all you February babies! You’re so lucky to be sharing the shortest month of the year with one of the sweetest holidays of all—Valentine’s Day! As either a witty, intelligent, and strong-willed Aquarius (Feb 1-18) or a compassionate, insightful, and creative Pisces (Feb 19-29), you’ve got some of the best qualities around.

Here are some February birthday fun facts you might find especially interesting:

  • Some would say your birth flower is the iris, which represents faith, hope, and wisdom. Others say it’s the violet, which represents faithfulness, modesty, and virtue. Which one’s your favorite?
  • According to tradition, the Roman emperor Augustus took one day off February and added it to August, the month named after him.
  • There are a few dozen national monthly observances during February, including Black History Month, Bird Feeding Month, Embroidery Month, Grapefruit Month, Haiku Writing Month, and Umbrella Month. There are just as many national weekly observances during February, including Friendship Week (week 1), Flirting Week (week 2), Secondhand Wardrobe Week (week 3), and Pancake Week (week 4).
  • A person born on February 29 during a leap year (which occurs only every four years) is called a “leapling” and will usually celebrate their birthday on either February 28 or March 1 in all non-leap years. The odds of being born on February 29 are 1 in 1,461 (or 0.068%) according to the Honor Society of Leap Year Day Babies.
  • An impressive roster of famous people were born in February! These iconic household names include: Jennifer Aniston (2/11), Drew Barrymore (2/22), Sheryl Crow (2/11), James Dean (2/8), Charles Dickens (2/7), Michael Bolton (2/26), Thomas Edison (2/11), Michael Jordan (2/17), Norman Rockwell (2/3), Babe Ruth (2/6), John Steinbeck (2/27), and John Travolta (2/18).

Ways to give back

January 21 By American Greetings

AG_TW_Kruse_Quote_December

During the holiday season, charities across the US see a large increase in the number of volunteers.  As people get into the giving spirit during the holidays, they find great ways to give back, whether it’s donating their time or money to an organization. Unfortunately, after the holiday excitement has come and gone, charities and non-profits oftentimes find themselves still needing enough volunteers.

So if you’re still looking for a New Years resolution that doesn’t involve a daily commitment, but can provide a lasting impact, we’d like to suggest setting a goal for giving back this year.

Need some help getting started? Here are some great ways to get involved in your community:

  • The gift of time – find a non-profit that resonates with something you’re passionate about, whether it’s doing a craft with local nursing home residents, caring for animals at a pet shelter, or putting together packages for military members overseas. By selecting a cause that’s near and dear to your heart, you’re more likely to follow through and the time you spend there will be even more meaningful.
  • Power in numbers – if your skill set includes event planning and a large network of friends and family, consider serving as an fundraising organizer! Community bake sales, rummage sales, and spaghetti dinners not only bring people together, but they can bring in surprising amounts of money for important causes.
  • Get moving – If you enjoy running or walking, there are a number of opportunities to raise money for charity while enjoying the great outdoors. Check to see if your favorite non-profit hosts a run or search for runs here.
  • Just get giving – If you find yourself time-strapped, non-profit organizations are always looking for financial contributions. This allows them to allocate dollars to the places that are most needed, but may not get as much attention. Websites like Guidestar can help you select organizations that are well-known for their fiscal responsibility.

If you still find yourself struggling to find something that’s a good fit for you, check out Volunteermatch.org, a site dedicated to helping you find local charity and volunteer opportunities!

What are some other ways to give back throughout the year to show gratitude for all of the blessings in our lives?

How To Beat The Winter Blues

January 7 By American Greetings

How to Beat the Winter BluesIs cabin fever cramping your style? You know the warning signs – lethargy, irritability and the inability to concentrate on anything but exotic trips to the tropics?

While sunny skies and warm weather are still months away, there’s plenty that can be done in the meantime to beat the winter doldrums. Even if you’re south of the Maxon-Dixon line, chillier weather can take its toll on you. From indoor entertaining to braving the elements, our experts at American Greetings would like to offer up the following tips on how to beat the winter blues–and keep the whole family entertained!

  • Set sails for sunny skies… in your living room! Have a warm weather movie night by bumping up the heat a few degrees (or pull out some warm blankets) and trick yourself into a summer mindset with a classic summer camp movie, such as Indian Summer, The Parent Trap or Meatballs.
  • Break up the monotony with a little Monopoly: Host a board game night with friends to bring everyone out of their igloos. Keep the menu simple and stress-free with cold weather favorites grilled cheese sandwiches and tomato soup.
  • Project time: Whether it’s cleaning out a neglected closet, organizing your recipes or family photos, or finishing a craft project, winter provides a great opportunity to stop procrastinating. You’ll feel proud of your accomplishment and happier in your newly clutter-free home.
  • Weeknight fun: Avoid workweek hibernation mode by breaking it up with meeting friends for coffee, visiting a relative or even a little retail therapy.
  • Find your inner peace: Take time for yourself to contemplate, meditate and de-stress. Whether you take up yoga, start journaling or just set aside some time for yourself, you’ll be glad that you did!
  • Create your 101 things in 1001 days list: Select 101 goals you would like to accomplish in the next 1001 days and come up with a plan to achieve them. Goals can be as simple as wanting to learn how to knit, as practical as paying down debt or as adventurous as bungee jumping.
  • Take a mental vacation: Since we don’t all have the ability to become globetrotters, try visiting your local library to select a travel book or DVD to learn about a new place. It might even inspire you to plan for your next vacation!
  • If you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em: Ice skating, skiing, sledding or even a short walk out in the winter wonderland offers the benefits of increased energy, an uplifted spirit and stress relief.

What’s your best tip for alleviating cabin fever?
