Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month

October 14 By American Greetings

AG_FB_10152016_Preg_Infant_Loss_Day

October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month. This can be an incredibly difficult time for many families, but sometimes the most difficult conversations are the most important ones to be had. It can also be hard to find the right words to say to someone in these circumstances, but offering support, an ear to listen, or a shoulder to cry on can make all the difference. We’ve invited local mom, and writer, Leslie Froelich, to share her experience with us, including a bit of advice when it comes to knowing what to say, and what not to say during these sensitive times.

For my family, it is painfully ironic that October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month.

On October 4th, 2012, we lost our baby girl, Hannah, to complications related to Heterotaxy Syndrome and a severe congenital heart defect. We had three beautiful, but agonizingly difficult, weeks with her before she was taken away from us. Her twin sister, Elizabeth, survived and is healthy and thriving, and we eventually went on to have another daughter, Maggie, who is now two years old.

I would give anything and everything to not be a part of the grieving parent’s club. To have all three of my children with me, laughing and playing together. Literally not a day goes by that I don’t think of Hannah and everything that happened, and it crushes my soul.
We experienced a particularly difficult pregnancy, as Elizabeth and Hannah were diagnosed originally as conjoined twins, and I was told to prepare for miscarriage. While this ended up not being the case, my girls were, unfortunately, an extremely rare and high risk set of twins referred to as Monochorionic-Monoamniotic or ‘Mono-Mono,’ meaning they shared one sac and one placenta. The risk of cord entanglement and death was a possibility at all times. I could never adequately put into words the suffocating anxiety and fear that my husband and I endured throughout my entire pregnancy.

I was eventually put onto hospital bed rest at 27 weeks gestation, for daily fetal monitoring and stress tests. Though I found ways to pass the time and I tried to remain positive, the almost two months I spent at the hospital were some of the darkest days of my life.
I delivered via C-section when Elizabeth and Hannah were at just 33.5 weeks gestation. They weighed less than four pounds each and were immediately whisked away to the NICU, where Elizabeth stayed for a little over three weeks before coming home. Hannah had open heart surgery on October 3rd, 2012. Ultimately, her body could not support her condition, and she passed away in my arms the morning of October 4th.

When Hannah died, I descended into hell on earth. My sadness and grief consumed me, and I completely disconnected from Elizabeth. I suffered horrific postpartum depression and anxiety, and it took almost a year of biweekly counseling, along with medication, to finally begin the healing process and start to fall in love with my daughter.

Today, I am better, but I will always feel incomplete and deeply sad over our loss. I will never fully recover from the fact that, instead of bringing two beautiful little girls home from the hospital in car seat carriers, one of my children came home in an urn. The reality of this fact haunts and torments me at all times, but I have to choose to be strong and move forward, for my own wellbeing and that of my family.

Losing a child is said to be the most unnatural thing in the world. Perhaps it is for that reason that so many people struggle with knowing what to say or do when someone they know loses a child, whether that be through miscarriage, still birth or infant loss. In my experience, the most common things people have said to me over the years are: “She is in a better place now;” “Everything happens for a reason;” “God must have had other plans for her;” and “At least you have your other daughters.”

I know that when people make these types of statements, their heart is in the right place and they only have the best of intentions. But I would say that in general, it is best to steer away from these types of comments, especially if you are unsure about a person’s religious beliefs. I myself personally am of the Christian faith, but even then, it still stings when someone infers that your child, whom you would give anything to see and hold, is somehow “better off” not physically here with you.

Hannah

Leslie and her family honor Hannah’s life every year with a lantern release over Lake Erie.

For that reason, I would say that the safest thing you can say to a parent who has lost a child would be some sort of variation of the following: “I’m so sorry for your loss. Please know that you are thought of often and supported.” Short, simple, and to the point, and virtually no potential for offense.

Another way to show support for someone who has lost a child is by simply acknowledging the child’s existence. Some people think this will cause pain for the parent, but for myself personally, anytime someone mentions Hannah’s name or recognizes that we have three children and not just two, I feel that Hannah is being honored and validated.

It also means a lot to me when people make comments about the pictures of Hannah that we have throughout our home, or when they recognize that September 12th is not just Elizabeth’s birthday, but Hannah’s as well. Yes, there are painful reminders, but by and large, I find that other grieving parents like myself want to acknowledge our children and find ways to keep their memory alive.

If you know someone who has lost a child, just know that showing your love and sympathy and support, whatever that may look like – whether by giving a much needed hug or shoulder to cry on, or by simply sitting with that that person and being there for them – is always the right thing to do.

IMG_7979Leslie Froelich is a freelance writer and co-founder of a postpartum depression support group in the Cleveland, Ohio area, run through the organization POEM (Perinatal Outreach and Encouragement for Moms). She is a stay at home mom to two daughters, Elizabeth and Maggie, as well as two cats, and has been married to her spouse, Nick, since 2007.

Printable Inspirational Quotes

September 21 By American Greetings

Fall is here, and there is something about this season that makes us want to bring out the warmest and kindest versions of ourselves. A really beautiful way to do that is carrying out little random acts of kindness for the people around us. We’ve collected some of our favorite inspirational quotes, and put them together on one printable sheet that you can cut out and leave for those around you.

Use them to remind people that you’re thinking about them, or even leave them for someone you may not know at all – because we could all use some gentle words for the soul to lift us up every once in while. Below are some suggestions for how you can use these little bits of inspirations.

People you live with:
Why not have one of these waiting first thing in the morning for someone to encourage a great day – especially if they had a not-so-great day yesterday.  In that case, the “Don’t ruin a good day because of a bad yesterday” quote is a perfect choice.

Another option for a good pick-me-up is the “All you need is love, but a little chocolate now and then doesn’t hurt,” quote. Leave this with a mini chocolate bar on the kitchen table and it’s pretty much guaranteed to make their morning bright.

Friends going through a tough time:
Sometimes life can be hard, and stressful, and busy, but knowing that a friend has your back and is there when you need them can make all the difference. “You’ll always have the help and support of people who care, especially me,” is a great quote to leave with a friend as a reminder that you’ll always be there when they need you the most.

“Let your faith be bigger than your fear,” is also nice thought to leave with someone who might need a few words of encouragement.

AG_BLG_Gentle_Words_Notes_5

Someone you may not know:
We don’t always have to know someone to make a difference in their day. Simply leaving the “Today seemed like a good day to wish you a good day,” quote on someone’s desk is a great prompt to start a “pay it forward” movement around the office. Also, “Color the world with goodness,” is a warm reminder for all of us to be as kind as possible.

What to write in a birthday card

August 9 By American Greetings

What to write in a birthday card

Celebrating a birthday is special, and sending a greeting card is the perfect way to add your wishes to the day. Once you’ve picked out the card, it’s nice to include your own personal message, too. But do you ever have a hard time figuring out what to write in a birthday card? We spent some time with our birthday card experts and put together some tips to help you.

First, you don’t need it to be lengthy—just sincere!  So get your favorite pen ready (pick a colored pen for a fun touch!) and get ready to write!

With your trusty pen at the ready, take some time to think about the recipient and your relationship with them. If it’s a casual friend, but you know what they have planned for their birthday, you can add a special wish such as “I hope your celebration gives you many happy memories to treasure always!” Also, including a compliment is always appreciated. For example, “May your birthday be as special as you are!”  or, “Wishing you all the happiness someone as nice as you deserves!”

If you’re close, you may want to write something more heartfelt. Take some time to think about what they mean to you, what they’ve done for you or your favorite memory of times you’ve shared together. These specific thoughts, emotions and memories are what make each relationship unique. While they might feel a little awkward to say at first, as you get in the habit of writing out your thoughts it will become easier with each card you write. You might want to write a draft on a piece of paper to make sure that the words come out right before you pen your final message on the card.

For an added touch of thoughtfulness, quotes make great birthday card sayings as well. There are many great quotation sites, or you can select one from a favorite book. Here are some that we especially like:

  •  Those who bring sunshine to the lives of others can not keep it from themselves. – Sir James Barrie
  •  And in the end, it’s not the years in your life that count. It’s the life in your years. – Abraham Lincoln
  •  A friend is, as it were, a second self. – Cicero
  •  You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream. – C.S. Lewis
  •  We turn not older with years, but newer every day. – Emily Dickinson
  •  Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! – Henry David Thoreau
  •  A true friend is someone who knows all about you and likes you just the same. – Elbert Hubbard
  •  Friendship is the only cement that will ever hold the world together. – Woodrow Wilson

Keep in mind that a warm closing will bring an extra smile for the birthday person. Besides the tried-and-true Love, you could consider phrases such as Thinking of You, Love Always, Your Friend, or Best Wishes Always. (And, of course, don’t forget to sign your name!)

Rainbow birthday party ideas: a bright and sunny brunch!

August 7 By American Greetings

Rainbow birthday party ideas

My dear friend Brittany was turning 28 years young this past September, so I decided to throw her an outdoor rainbow birthday party brunch. We definitely wanted to leverage the lovely weather we were having, but this bright and sunny birthday party theme can work all year ’round! I had a blast planning and executing this party in a nearby park, and this Dots & Stripes Party was the perfect theme to showcase Brittany’s bubbly personality. In this blog you will read about my set-up and links to affordable DIY projects to match the party. Don’t forget to download the free rainbow birthday party printables to help you make this party as easy for you as it is fun!

Rainbow birthday party invites

First thing’s first – after I locked down the location, date and time – I had to get the invitations out to our girlfriends. Then the fun part — the party planning begins!

Stripes and dots party plates, cups and napkins

The plates, napkins and cups were an easy set-up and coordinated awesomely with each another. I thought it would be fun to design matching free printable napkin wraps and printable personalized name tents to make the party-goers feel welcomed. So I used a couple rolls of wrapping paper for some corresponding touches. The green roll of wrapping paper served as a table runner on the picnic table (don’t forget tape – winds can kick up any time at outdoor events!) and a blue roll of wrapping paper went around some old soup cans to use as flower jars. These modest additions really helped make the pieces pop off the table!

DIY tissue paper backdrop

I wanted to create a dramatic backdrop for the treat table without breaking the bank or having to follow any excessively hard tutorials. So I used white tissue paper and constructed this awesome DIY Tissue Backdrop (courtesy of Lovely Indeed!) for a really nice touch for a relatively low cost, which is always appreciated. I also bought some additional colored tissue paper and made these fun DIY Tissue Fans (courtesy of Domestic Fashionista!). Luckily, the Dots & Stripes Party has a great room decorating kit that is jam-pack full of pieces that can be used in really any way you see fit. I placed a couple of the paper cutouts over the fans, to add some birthday flair. And finally connected the party banner from the tissue backdrop above the picnic table to unify the seating and treat areas.

DIY tissue paper poms

This was my favorite DIY task by far. I used some of the American Greetings tissue paper I had left over and made these playful DIY Tissue Poms (instructions courtesy of Two Twenty One). In the party aisle, I picked up some crepe paper and put together this DIY Crepe Paper Chandelier (instructions from Polka Dot Prints Studio) which was very easy to assemble and hung beautifully above the picnic table where we feasted!

Rainbow birthday party name tags and favors

And what’s a party without all eyes on the guest of honor, right? The birthday girl herself deserves a little flair, too! And this birthday sash was a totally-worth-it purchase. To complement it, I found this cute DIY Tissue Headband tutorial from Studio DIY and put more of my beautiful rainbow of tissue paper to good use as an amazing fascinator. I doubled the free printable personalized tent cards I designed as food labels so everyone knew exactly what they were diving into (a perfect solution to clarify ingredients, too, if you have any guests with food preferences or allergies).

Stripes and dots birthday party

I’d purchased the cupcake decorating kit that included a bunch of cups and decorative picks not knowing I’d end up buying donuts instead of making cupcakes. Fortunately, I was able to use the cups as fruit salad holders and the picks were perfect as mini-utensils. I had a lot of elements left in the room decorating kit, so I used this easy DIY Straw Easel tutorial from Wants and Wishes Design to hold the customizable age sign. It made for a nice decorative element on the treat table.

As a general rule, a party isn’t complete without a cake as we all know! I found this deceptively easy Rainbow Layer Cake Recipe (Parade.com) and substituted in Sprees to match the dots theme. Then topped it with this fun pennant banner cake topper (also a free printable, just for you!) that can be personalized to fit anyone’s name. Perfecto!

Birthday brunch ideas

Being a birthday brunch and all, I knew this Sparkling Fruit Sangria Recipe from Sally’s Baking Addiction was going to be a huge hit. To help keep the jars in their respective hands, I designed these free printable straw & jar labels for the guests to fill out so they could bling out their own beverage. So. Much. Fun. A great time was had by all, and the weather held out for a super-nice day!

Rainbow doughnut bar

If you’re a donut lover in the Cleveland area, you probably know the legendary Brewnuts™! To match the party, I ordered a custom baker’s dozen to fit the theme and they were absolutely delish! I had also bought this cupcake stand before I decided to go with donuts, but it ended up being a perfect centerpiece to showcase these beauties.

Free printable thank you labels

As the eating, drinking, and overall merriment was coming to a close, I still wanted to give a little shoutout of thanks to the ladies that came out to celebrate the birthday girl. So I found a delicious looking Cranberry Lime Vodka Recipe from Fancy Napkin Blog I prepared ahead of time, and jarred it so guests could take home a little toast of thanks to them! Cranberries weren’t in season, so I substituted grapes. You can pretty much add any fruit to any vodka, and as it sits in the jar, magic happens regardless of the combo. I then designed free printable thank you labels to spray-mount onto the jars so everyone knew to grab on their way out. What better way to say thanks then a take-home-toast? (I had many good praises on this thank-you gift!)

Rainbow birthday brunch ideas

The birthday brunch was a success! With all the work done easily upfront, we had a great time catching up over tasty treats and beverages while celebrating our amazing friend Brittany. Overall, this rainbow birthday party was a lot of fun to put together — and it was surprisingly easy while also affordable with the help of the do-it-yourself tutorials and the free printables. Needless to say, now that I’ve seen how much the guests enjoyed the event, I can’t wait to throw the next party!

Ultimate Father’s Day Gift Guide

June 2 By American Greetings

AG_FB_LINK_BLOG_FDAY_Gift_Guide

Father’s Day is right around the corner, and now is the time that you’re probably starting to think about what to get your dad or husband for the holiday. If you don’t want to dip into the same bag of tricks – ties, gift cards, or a round of golf – check out our latest gift guides.

This new series of gift guides focus on specific relationships – Father/Daughter, Father/Son, and Husband/Wife. The relationship you have can determine the type of gift you want to give, and in some cases, it’s not just a gift, but an experience.

Instead of getting Dad a gift card to his favorite restaurant, take him to a cooking class so you can spend some quality time together. Rather than taking your dad out for a beer, help him make his own with a beer making kit. If your husband wishes he had more time to relax, gift him a hammock and a good book, and set some time aside for a lazy Sunday afternoon together.

It’s about more than the gifts, it’s about the experiences and memories that come with the gifts. Use the time together to reminisce, or make plans for the future. Capture your Father’s Day activities and make a digital scrap book or photo album for your dad. If you don’t live near your dad, is it possible to show up at his door on Father’s Day, or maybe buy him a ticket to come visit you and your family? One of the best gifts we can ever give is the gift of time.

We hope our gift ideas spark a little inspiration this Father’s Day, and remember, Dads are pretty great and deserve to be celebrated!

Here are our official 2016 Father’s Day Gift Guides:

From Wife / From Daughter / From Son

Father’s Day Gifts from Wife

June 2 By American Greetings

AG_FB_LINK_Roundup_FDAY_Gifts_Wife

1. Bring out his inner comic: Sick in the Head, by Judd ApatowThis is a great choice if your husband hasn’t had a chance to dig into a good book recently. Full of interviews from Mel Brooks and Steve Martin, to Sarah Silverman and Amy Schumer, the book gives a glimpse inside the world of this self-proclaimed comedy nerd.

2. Never lose the keys again: Tile
Nothing is off limits to lose in a busy household. Between getting kids out the door to the million places they need to go, business trips, or just trips to the grocery store, there are a lot of things that can go missing. Tile is a tiny Bluetooth tracker and easy-to-use app that finds everyday items in seconds—like your phone, keys, and wallet.

3. For the dad who values time: Timex Watch
Even though we rely on our smart phones for everything today, there’s still something classic about a good ‘ol fashion wrist watch. This Timex model is casual, and allows his personality to shine through with a plethora of strap choices – from rugged leather, to bright nylon patterns.

4. For the binge-watching Dad: Harmony Universal Remote
We have more options than ever when it comes to television – Netflix, Hulu, Apple TV, etc; and they all come with their own remote. Sifting through the pile of remotes to find the right one can be pretty annoying when you’re just trying to relax after a long day. That’s why the Harmony universal remote is great gift idea; it allows you to bring all options together in one, easy-to-use device.

5. Moscow Mule Mugs: Things Remembered
Moscow Mules are making a comeback as one of the most popular drink choices. Jump on the band wagon by gifting him 100% copper mugs – the historically accurate way to enjoy this delicious drink. Make the mugs truly his own by personalizing them, and complete the gift with the ingredients needed to make a couple rounds.

6.  Keeping him well groomed: Dollar Shave Club
If your husband is always adding razors to the shopping list, this is a great choice. Select a type of blade, ranging from $1-$9, and have a supply sent to your door every month. Each one comes with a free compatible handle, and it’s simple to upgrade or downgrade blade types. He’ll never have an excuse not to have a smooth face again.

There’s something about the bond between a father and a daughter that is truly special. This Father’s Day, treat Dad to something he’ll love, but go the extra step of planning the day around the gift. All of these ideas are not only things that he’ll love, but they’re memories in the making!

This compact printer can print pictures directly from your phone or tablet in a lightning fast 60 seconds – perfect for any busy dad. And he’ll love the throwback, old-school Polaroid camera vibe of instant pictures.

5. Foodie Dad– Cooking class at Sur la TableSurLaTable1 Everyone is looking for the “perfect gift” for dad, but sometimes perfect doesn’t necessary mean it needs to be wrapped with a big bow.  Sometimes the perfect gift can just be spending time with him. So if your dad enjoys cooking – or just eating in general – why not take a cooking class together? You won’t only be creating great food from scratch; you’ll also be making perfect memories.

6. Sports Dad– Go to a baseball game02_SportsDad1
It’s summer! Enjoy the weather and time with dad by treating him to a baseball game. Many parks have fireworks or other promotional giveaways around Father’s Day to add to the fun. And nothing says, “Thanks for everything, dad.”, like a hot dog and beer.  Win or lose, this is a great gift for dad.

Father’s Day Gifts from Son

June 2 By American Greetings

AG_FB_LINK_Roundup_FDAY_Gifts_Son

Father’s Day is right around the corner, and instead of the ordinary go-to’s like ties and gift cards, go the extra mile this year, and get something Dad will truly enjoy. We have some great ideas that are a bit outside of the box, and also allow you to get involved so you can spend some quality time together.

1. For the Dad in need of relaxation: Do Good Hammock

04_Hammock

Dads work hard and need some rest and relaxation. This hammock is made to fit one or two people to soak up some sunshine. Equipped with a nylon carrying case, this hammock is also easy to take on the go. (let me know if you think I should add the aspect of the fair trade)

2. For the dad who has everything: Subscription Box
02_Bespoke2 Struggling to find your Dad the right gift this year? The Bespoke Post subscription box is a great option for the Dads who have it all. This box can be given one time or as a subscription, you also have the option of picking out the boxes for Dad or allowing him to pick his own. All subscription and gift boxes are limited editions and revolved around a central theme.  Boxes from Bespoke Post include ties, whiskey, grilling sets, shaving kits and more. Even if your Dad has everything, you’ll be able to find a unique and thoughtful gift.

3. For the Grill Master: Gourmet Condiments Sauces
03_grill-taster1 Barbeque season is here; make sure Dad is ready to fire up the grill. The condiment sauces from Mouth.Com include gourmet spreads like garlic hot sauce, Jojo’s sriracha, gourmet mustards and salsas.  Dads will be so excited to receive these gifts; they may end up grilling out for a Father’s Day barbeque!

4. For the Beer-loving Dad: Beer-Making Kit
Mr. Beer - Beer making kit with barrel, bottles and ingredients. This is perfect gift for the Dad who enjoys a cold beverage. The beer-making kit is ideal for beginners and comes with all the necessities to brew your own beer at home. The kit is also reusable and may become a new hobby for Dad.

What to Write in a Father’s Day Card

June 1 By American Greetings

AG_FB_BLOG_FDAY_WTW

My dad used to send me into a panic whenever given the ceremonial after-dinner card on birthdays or Father’s Day.  What was I worried about?

He actually read the card aloud to the family.

“Holy cow — what does it say?” I’d be thinking through my sweat.  For, being a young man of my time, I’d never read the message through, just a few words on the front and skimmed to the ending.  Happily, though, because American Greetings cards are carefully crafted to say just the right thing, I needn’t have worried.  Now I’m editing those card lines and, as a father myself, I take great pride in selecting just the right messages for our products.

My dad was probably a lot different from yours: like many of his generation, he wasn’t overly expressive of his softer side, preferring to let his actions speak for him.  Younger dads are a lot closer to their kids and more open with their feelings, though not all are as comfortable that way as others.  So if you want to know what to say in a Father’s Day card it’s gotta start with what kind of guy he is.

Is he the classic strong, silent type?  If so, he’s going to know all about saying the most with the least amount of words and reading between the lines for the deeper message.  If you’re going for the plain and direct sentiment, it might read something like:

  • Straight up and right to the point…
You’re a great dad, and you’re loved very much.

Or, if you’re more likely to share your message in a kidding way, it can be fun affectionately turning his words back on him:

  • Happy Father’s Day, Dad.
    Okay!  Good talk.

What if he’s an old softie?  These guys can handle a little sentimentality.  You might want to turn up the Love, Pride or Gratitude, just for him:

  • I’ll never be too old to need you, Dad.
Hope you know how much I’ll always love, care for, and appreciate you.

Maybe he’s not your biological father but he’s had a real influence on your life and deserves to know how you feel about him.

  • fa – ther (n.) Someone who cares and helps and guides you.  (Shared DNA not required.)
Just thinking about how lucky I am to have you in my life.

Are there any special interests he’s known for?  Sometimes it’s nice just knowing you “get” him:

  • Take it easy, sit and chill,
Get a game in, fire the grill,
Surf the channels, lift a brew,
And celebrate a great dad — you!

No matter what type of man he is, if there’s one thing all dads everywhere want to be recognized for, it’s the hard work they put into being a good father.  You really can’t go wrong with a simple “I notice”:

  • For the wonderful things you do that I might not always notice, and the words of wisdom that might sometimes get ignored, thank you.   Not a day goes by when I don’t feel very, very lucky to have a dad like you!

Whether you come up with something sweet, witty or wise, only you know what makes the dad in your life so special to you—and that’s what he really wants to hear. Be sure to check out our website for everything Father’s Day, including Father’s Day eCards, Print at Home cards, and more.
