Gratitude and Grief: Kristin’s ThankList

Gratitude and Grief: Kristin's ThankList

When we launched the ThankList, we knew that we would likely hear compelling stories of gratitude from others. Once the concept of a ThankList is explained, it’s hard not to start creating the mental list of those who have had an impact on our lives. But the outpouring of support for our mission and desire from our fan base for their stories and voices to be heard has been truly humbling.

One of those conversations revealed a compelling, inspiring story that we wanted to share here with you.

In 2007, Kristin Meekof’s husband Roy was diagnosed with advanced stage adrenal cancer. Yet somehow, despite the grim prognosis and enduring an aggressive treatment schedule, Kristin found Roy not only accepting of his diagnosis, but relishing in moments of gratitude for the life he’d been given.

He never said, “Why me?”. Instead, he said, “Why not me?”

Despite being widowed at age 33 only 8 weeks after his initial diagnosis, it was Roy’s open heart and attitude of gratitude that has stayed with her. She says that he taught her that gratitude is the answer to nearly every question. Inspired by both his spirit and her ability to turn something tragic into something beautiful, we had a few questions we wanted to ask about Roy and his legacy.

Q: Tell us a little about your husband Roy.

Kristin: Roy was a middle school teacher, a veteran, and a gentle soul. My husband lived with an open heart and very much believed in living in the light, literally and figuratively. Before we were married we exchanged gratitude lists with each other via email, so thankfulness wasn’t something foreign to him. It was part of his being.

{Gratitude when you are diagnosed with terminal cancer

is bringing light out of a very dark well.

In this light of gratitude is the place that he dwelled. }

Q: Do you think he knew how he changed you? Did you ever get to say thank you?

Kristin: I would like to think that he knew that his presence, our marriage, our friendship changed me, but I don’t know if he knew how deep it was. Since we were in the habit of exchanging gratitude lists, something we started before we were married, I did say thank you.

And since my late husband’s death, I make it a point to give a handwritten thank you cards to my dear friends because their kindness matters to me. It is important to put these things in writing and thank you cards are a beautiful gesture of kindness.

Q: How has your life changed because of his perspective?

Kristin: With gratitude comes an openness and a sense of bravery. About three years ago, I decided that I wanted to co-write a book for widows of all ages, and I interviewed many widows about their experiences. The widows were incredibly generous with their time and thoughts and for each of them I am eternally grateful. It is all bittersweet because the impetus for this research and book is loss, but gratitude made it possible. Gratitude opened the door for this book project and as a result I’ve formed some incredible friendships.

Q: If you could speak to him today, what would say?

Kristin: I would tell him that I still think of him daily and continue to love him. I would thank him for teaching me that gratitude is the answer to nearly every question.

I think he would be surprised to know that I co-wrote a book, and then I’d explain that I decided to write the book for widows so that they would feel less alone. Then, I would talk about all of the beautiful people who helped me with this three year project, and some of the gorgeous opportunities that I’ve been given.

Kristin is a Huffington Post contributor and co-author of the book A Widow’s Guide to Healing: Gentle Support and Advice for the First 5 Years. As a part of her dedication to helping grieving widows around the world, she’s traveled to Kenya with a charity organization.

Introducing #ThankList

March 31 By American Greetings

Introducing ThankList by American GreetingsAs you well know, American Greetings is rooted in helping to create meaningful connections. For more than 100 years, we‘ve been bringing people together through expressions of happiness, laughter and love through our words and artwork. Recently, we decided to take our efforts to make the world a more thoughtful and caring place to the next level.

And that’s why we’d like to invite you to join our ThankList movement! It‘s an initiative that challenges people to create a list of individuals they want to thank for helping to shape their life. They can be family, friends, teachers, mentors… anyone who has made a difference in your life. The ThankList is a catalyst for expressing gratitude and heartfelt forum in which to do so.

We’re all familiar with a bucket list–a list of things you want to do before you die. But a ThankList? That’s a list of important people in your life that you want to thank to feel alive.

ThankList Definition

How can you join in the #ThankList movement?  It’s as simple as saying two words–thank you.

We created a digital experience that encourages everyone to start practicing gratitude by writing their own ThankList. Via written word or a dynamic personal video, all messages of thanks are aggregated into a collective, never-ending ThankList. You can also watch a compelling documentary series by two-time OSCAR® winning filmmaker, Barbara Kopple that follows five real people as they created and fulfilled a their own personal ThankList.

Lastly, you can also join in by using #ThankList on Twitter or Instagram and sharing your stories of gratitude. We’ll be sharing your stories here.

The importance of gratitude

March 27 By American Greetings

The Importance of GratitudeWhere has the gratitude gone?

If it’s true that we learned everything we need to know in kindergarten, than it seems a large part of our society needs to head back to the classroom to be reminded of the pillars of human kindness. In our modern tech world, our heads are looking down at our phones and we’re more disconnected than ever! In fact, a 2014 Civility in American study conducted by Weber Shandwick, Powell Tate and KPC Research revealed that 95% of Americans believe we have a civility problem in America. The good news is that the same study showed that 87% of people are willing to do something about it!

Here at American Greetings, we’d like to present a remedy for a rude world–gratitude. We’re on a mission to put gratitude back on the map and make the world a more thoughtful and caring place one ‘thank you’ at a time. To start, we’ve partnered with Harris Poll and learned some eye-opening statistics about gratitude in America.

Infographic: The Importance of Thank You

Were you surprised to read that people are craving to hear the words, “thank you?”

Help us make a difference! Visit ThankList.com and together we can make the world a little bit nicer if we simply remember to show gratitude, share, and above all—hold hands and stick together.

The five friends everyone needs to have

March 16 By American Greetings

Friendship quoteIn every person’s life, some good times will be had and some tears will fall—but who is always there to share the ups and downs with you? You may not realize it, but your friends shape and sustain you through both happy and sad times, altering forever our perspectives, our hearts and even the course of your life!

When hard times appear, you always turn to your friends for the right reaction and words. While the pressures of daily life may have gotten in the way of nurturing these relationships, a bump in the road is always a speedy reminder of what (and who) is important to you.

With this in mind, here is our list of the five friends that every woman needs to have:

  • A shared history: Whether you met playing junior high basketball or at your first job out of college, having a friend who knows your history helps you to remember who you are and where you come from. Even if you don’t get to see each other as often as you’d like, when you get together it’s like no time has passed at all.
  • Your own personal therapist: Having a friend who truly listens, helps you get to the root of problems, and come up with solutions is essential. She helps to keep you balanced and is always there when you’re not feeling sure about what to do or even how you feel. Best yet, you know that no matter what, she’ll keep your secrets in the utmost confidence.
  • Two peas in a pod: Having a friend who shares your interests–whether it’s a love for listening to local bands or spending the day quietly scrapbooking, helps keep you on track and active. Whenever one of you gets a hankering for your favorite things, you know you can always reach out and make solid plans with one another.
  • The work friend: Since we don’t get to make friends on the playground anymore, sometimes you need to be a little old school and make a friend in the office lunchroom. Having someone to share your daily gripes (and giggles) with definitely makes the work day go faster, and oftentimes these friendships can blossom even further after you’re coworkers.
  • Mommy madness: If you’re a parent, you need another mommy friend to talk to, vent, and share tips with. Whether you meet her through your child’s school or just around town, you’ll need someone who truly understands your daily struggles (and also your joy!) She can also be there in a pinch—whether you need someone to pick the kids up

While it can be more challenging to make friends as an adult, making it a focus to both create and nurture these relationships has great rewards. Always keep your “friend antenna” up and tuned in to see what new friends you can make. You never know if they may turn out to be just the type of person who could make meaningful contributions to your life.

Did we miss any types of friends that you think are must-haves?

Take on a creative challenge

March 10 By American Greetings

Take on a new creative challenge

Last week we shared a few fun ideas for hobbies, but this week we wanted to expand with a few that lean into your artistic side!

Did you know that learning a new skill could improve your brain function and help protect against cognitive decline? The brain is a complex and fascinating network of nerve fibers that respond to mental stimulation and exercise. But beyond the physiological benefits of trying a new hobby or craft, there are benefits to your self esteem as you expand your horizons, make time for yourself, and even have the opportunity to connect and share these hobbies with friends and family.

Put your crafting skills to the test with these fun creative challenge projects that are simple to master and then reap the unexpected benefits!

  • Knitting: What do Julia Roberts and Cameron Diaz know that you don’t? While some may guess that they know what it’s like to collect multi-million dollar paychecks (which may be true), the real answer is that they all know the joy and skill of knitting. Stitching and purling is not only rewarding in the sense that you are creating a new accessory and garment, but many find that the feel of needles and yarn to be relaxing. The craft is so popular, there is an entire social networking site dedicated to the craft!
  • Scrapbooking: Preserving family photos has come a long way from the days of just placing them into an album behind a plastic sheet. Today scrapbooking has grown into a multi-billion dollar business where “scrappers” (as they’re affectionately called) create personalized, multidimensional storybooks to be treasured for years to come. Many scrapbook companies and craft stores offer workshops, weekend scrapbooking retreats, and even cruise vacations to enjoy the hobby in the company of others. What better way to celebrate fond memories of the past while making new ones (and getting a suntan!) at the same time?
  • Cooking:  You don’t have to attend culinary school to tap into your inner Julia Child. We mentioned last week that trying new foods can be considered a hobby, but if you’re not already skilled in the culinary arts, attending a cooking class can expose you to new types of food, preparation techniques and a world of tastier and healthier meals with less processed ingredients. For a more laid back approach to the art, pair up with an adventurous friend and take turns hosting an evening where you cook together, learning a new recipe in unison.
  • Photography: We’ve often heard people described as “having an eye” for photography, but have you really given your eye the opportunity to flourish? Learning a little bit of composition and gaining a clear understanding of settings offered by your particular camera goes a long way in making you able to operate it confidently, and with ease. Once you’ve mastered the technical aspects, go out and express yourself while recording places, people, and occasions that are important to you. You never know, you could turn your love of photography into a new career!

Whatever new hobby you choose, selecting one that suits your lifestyle will benefit you tremendously… And if things go awry, at least you’ll have some fun anecdotes and you can be commended for giving it a try.

Do you consider yourself crafty? What’s your latest project? We’d love to hear about it in the comments!

Time saving tips

Time Saving Tips to Get You Organized

Springtime and extended daylight often inspire us to tackle the tasks on our to-do lists that have been looming for a while. But just when it already seems that there’s not enough hours in a day to get everything done, Mother Nature goes ahead and plays a little joke by springing forward the clock, taking with it one hour of our precious time.

And so in the spirit of springing forward this weekend, we’ve put together a list of tips to help you get everything done with greater efficiency–in order to give you more time to spend focus on the people you love!

  • Write it down: Whether you choose to jot notes to yourself, utilize a date planner or calendar, or a handy reminder app, save yourself time in the long run by finding a handy resource that best suits your existing habits to keep track of to-do lists, chores, schedules, and important dates all in one place
  • Solve your “Twilight Zone” moments: If you often ask yourself, “Where did the time go?” paying closer attention to time wasters might reveal where you’re getting off track so you can identify routine changes that will prevent these issues from reoccurring. If you spend ten minutes a day trying to decide what to wear, try preparing a wardrobe for the entire week each Sunday night. If you’re regularly searching for a misplaced party invitation or important letter, consider creating a mail center to keep track of important paper items.
  • Create a personal timesaving policy: Take a stand against wasting time by always finishing projects to completion and thinking about what you can do in advance to save you time for when you really need it (like going through your mail every single day to prevent pileup or cooking double batches of food and freezing extras).
  • Multitask: Multitasking doesn’t mean talking on your phone while driving (it’s dangerous!) but it can mean taking that brand new to-do list and deciding what tasks can be accomplished together with a minimal amount of stops or cross-town driving. Taking care of smaller trips during your commute or on your lunch hour can offer great relief as well, without becoming burdensome.
  • Take 15 minutes a day: Set a routine of spending 15 minutes picking up around the house to prevent things from getting messy. If 15 minutes is too much to ask, try cleaning up during commercials or tackling one surface, drawer or cupboard per day.
  • Delegate, delegate, delegate: Just because you’re the list holder doesn’t mean that it absolves other family members of any responsibility. Watch for opportunities for other family members to alleviate you of unnecessary trips to the store, or teach them how to do household chores.

What’s your best time-saving tip?

New hobbies (to do with friends!)

March 2 By American Greetings

New Hobbies to Do With Friends

If you search for the most popular hobbies today, you would learn that our society considers pretty much anything a hobby. In fact, we came across one list that included napping and watching TV! Not that there is anything wrong with either activity (who doesn’t love a nap?) but we were aiming for something…a little more creative to help us get through these last few weeks of winter.

However, the more we thought about it, the more we realized that most of the simple things everyone enjoys can also be opportunities for us to not only learn something new, but to spend quality time with our family and friends who may be suffering from a similar bout of cabin fever!

So, with that optimistic spring-forward view in mind, we compiled a few suggestions to transform leisurely activities into useful hobbies.

  • Start a book club: By forming a club based on your love of reading you not only gain more ideas to help you as you peruse bookstore aisles and library shelves, but you also get some much needed quality time and thoughtful conversation. To personalize your group, focus on topics, titles or authors that you have always wanted to read. If you really want to challenge yourself, come up with a goal of how many books you would like to complete by year’s end, and keep a running tab of how you are doing.
  • Get in the game: Video games have evolved from being the bane of parent’s existence to a great pastime for anyone in the family! Now, with the wide variety of games (including singing and dancing competitions) that get you up and going, you can add a little activity into every day without leaving your living room. Multi-task by spending some time with loved ones while burning off a little energy in the process. Set up a regular game night or begin a tournament to get your competitive juices flowing.
  • Create a whole new playlist: Musical tastes ebb and flow like few other forms of entertainment, but few hobbies are as universally appreciated. This year, embrace your love of music and expand your horizons by trying out new genres and performers. Research older artists that may fit your particular tastes or seek out new acts that friends enjoy. Whether adding to your playlist for the treadmill or taking in some fun concerts, the practice will certainly help you gain some appreciation for the medium.
  • Start a culinary quest: Checking out the latest restaurant, or simply enjoying a quiet dinner out, can be a challenge. Budgeting time and finances often leads to ordering in or making a quick meal instead of an outing. This year, spice things up by creating a small dinner club or schedule “dinner dates” with other couples every month. Enjoying a good meal and a quiet night can be the perfect anecdote to a long week, and making it a monthly practice will help ensure that your newest hobby is affordable while giving you something to look forward to.
  • Lights, camera, hobby: Few activities have been made more convenient over the past few years than enjoying a movie. You can make a night out of it by hitting the local movie-theater, rent a DVD or set up the ultimate Netflix queue. So, whether you are looking to host your own film festive live from your living room or revel in all of the subtleties that make a movie theater so charming, coordinate a regular movie night with friends and family.

By integrating entertainment into your life in a way that not only helps you to learn but also connect more with those close to you, you are sure to grow and have a lot of fun in the process. No matter what piques your interest, challenge yourself and be sure to include others to enhance your appreciation!

Do you have a new favorite hobby? We’d love to hear it in the comments!

What Oscar Film Are You?

February 19 By American Greetings

What Oscar Film Are You?

With the 87th annual Academy Awards taking place this Sunday, now seems a good time to admit that the movies we love actually reflect a lot about our personalities. No matter who you will be rooting for this year, all of the nominees have joined the distinguished company of films that are treasured classics.

With more than seven decades of films to choose from, this year is the perfect time to find the oscar film that best reflects who you are (or at least get a few fun suggestions to add to your Netflix queue.) Here are some suggestions from our in-house movie lovers sure to fit any cinema-inspired personality.

Are you a romantic at heart?

Romantic films are not just mindless entertainment; they are escapist fun that moviegoers have enjoyed since the dawn of filmmaking. From classic tragedies to realistic comedies, the theme of real love has always been a popular one in Hollywood. Are you just like many of those top-level movie execs that just can’t help falling in love with people falling in love? If so, then here are a few films for you.

  • “The English Patient” (1996) is the film that proves the rule, “better to have loved and lost than to have never loved before.”
  • “Shakespeare in Love” (1998) scored a shocking upset to win the Best Picture award thanks to its literally Shakespearean balance of romance and comedy.
  • “Lost in Translation” (2003) paired Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson as the unlikeliest of friends, let alone possible romantic partners.

Are you someone who enjoys a rewarding challenge?

If you enjoy your cinema on a grand scale than you are probably a fan of the big budget epic. If this is your genre of choice you are also likely to enjoy thought provoking material and activities that really engage your attention and intellect. Sticking with a film that spans years or that examines the enormity of a situation can be challenging, but it can also be very rewarding as well. If you prefer losing yourself in one of these tall tales here are a few suggestions for your viewing pleasure:

  • “Dances with Wolves” (1990) was Kevin Costner’s epic tale of war and culture.
  • “Titanic” (1997) remains the top grossing film of all time, but if you never saw it, now is your chance.
  • “The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King” (2003) took best picture, but it takes all three of Frank Jackson’s epic hobbit-inspired tales to tell the story of one special journey.

Are you always up for an adventure?

Films are supposed to take you away, and if your preference is to get lost in the suspense and tension a great thriller delivers, the action/adventure genre is for you. While big budget action films crowd the Cineplex every summer, some classics have been able to elevate the fun to a higher level of entertainment. Are you a thrill seeker always looking for a new experience? If so, here are a few examples of award winners you might enjoy (its not quite an extreme sport, but as far as movie viewing goes…)

  • “The Fugitive” (1993) followed Harrison Ford on his tireless quest to find the “one-armed man” who ruined his life.
  • “Apollo 13” (1995) made an unsuccessful trip to the moon, and the harrowing return home, edge of your seat entertainment.
  • “Gladiator” (2000) saw Russell Crowe fight for the honor of his family during the Roman era in what could be the most action packed Best Picture winner of all time.

Are you looking for a laugh?

Comedies have always had trouble at the Academy Awards, but they have also been one of the favorite genres of movie fans since the days of Charlie Chaplin and the silent film era. Classic film comedies connect us back to the memories or emotions we all share, proving that laughter is something we should enjoy together. Looking for a good laugh this spring? Check out one of these timeless titles:

  • “Four Weddings and a Funeral” (1994) launched the career of Hugh Grant and proved that there were films that could make good on the promise of comedy in a romantic comedy.
  • “Babe” (1995) may be the only Best Picture nominee in history to feature a talking pig, but fans loved the heartwarmingly amusing tale.
  • “Little Miss Sunshine” (2006) took a satirical look at beauty pageants and family dynamics.

Our Favorite Romantic Movies

What better way to celebrate Valentine’s Day than with dinner and a movie? But this year, give a twist to this old standby date by mixing it up a bit. Choose an exciting new restaurant you’ve been wanting to try instead, or plan a fun picnic (complete with candles, if you like) in your own living room. Then carefully select just the right film—one that best suits your relationship—to perfectly round out the evening.

Whether you’re a hopeless romantic or a mischievous imp, our diehard, movie-loving Valentine’s Day crew want to help by offering up a few suggestions. And if you’ve got any other favorite movies to add to our list, please let us know in the comments below!

  • Traditional: Perfect for the romantic at heart in your life, these films capture the essence of everlasting love.
    • Casablanca, Say Anything, Hope Floats, The Notebook, Dirty Dancing, Titanic, When Harry Met Sally…, Ever After
  • Guaranteed Laughs: Equal parts flirty and fun, a good romantic comedy offers a lighthearted way to celebrate love in any stage, whether you’ve just started dating or been together for decades.
    • You’ve Got Mail, Pretty in Pink, Valentine’s Day, Never Been Kissed, Sweet Home Alabama
  • Going to the Chapel: Getting married soon? There are a ton of fabulous movies about this special time in your life that are filled with twists, turns, and best of all–weddings!
    • The Wedding Planner, 27 Dresses, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Confetti, The Wedding Singer, Bridesmaids, Our Family Wedding, The Wedding Date
  • We’re Not Weird, We’re Quirky: If you describe your movie-going tastes (or your sense of humor) as a little off the beaten path, try one of these fun flicks.
    • Harold and Maude, Punch-Drunk Love, Annie Hall, Away We Go, If Lucy Fell, Moonstruck
  • Young at Heart: Looking for something sweet to watch with the kiddos? These family-friendly favorites are sure to warm everyone’s heart.
