Fowl Play – Let’s Talk Turkey!

November 14 By American Greetings

Happy Thanksgiving!

Turkey Day is almost here, so it’s time to start training for those important Thanksgiving traditions.  First, get those arms in shape for all the passing you’re going to be doing:  left, right, left, right—you’ve got to keep that turkey platter moving around the table!  And while you could work off some calories and make room for dessert by passing the ol’ pigskin around in the backyard, it’s more likely you’re going to join millions of armchair quarterbacks and watch other folks make the passes.  That’s right—it’s football time, one of the greatest Thanksgiving traditions of all!  Your job’s not done, though.  After all, you’ll still need to pass the remote, drinks, snacks, leftovers…so get training!

Happy Halloween Everyone!

October 31 By American Greetings

Moodboard: The magic of Halloween Ecards and the history of the Halloween Costume and Pumpkin Carving.

It’s Halloween — time to light your pumpkins and put out the candy for those trick-or-treaters!  Have you ever wondered how those customs came about?  Well, it seems the tradition of trick-or-treating is similar to the practice of  “souling” during the Middle Ages.  Common in England and Ireland, poor folk would go door-to-door on Hallowmas or what is now known as All Saints Day begging for food  in return for prayers for the dead.  As for pumpkin carving, it is believed that it began with the celtic custom of carving turnips into lanterns as a way to remember the souls held in purgatory.  As immigrants from Ireland and Scotland came to North America in the mid-1800’s, the pumpkin became a much better substitute for carving because it was softer and larger – so, happy carving and have a frightfully fun night!  A special note to all of our American Greetings’ friends and their families who continue to deal with the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, you are in our thoughts this holiday.

Special Birthday Wishes

October 10 By American Greetings

Happy Birthday

Make a wish and blow out your candles!  Have you ever wondered how that birthday ritual began?  Well, it turns out it has been around for a long, long time.  According to historians, the ancient Greeks believed that the flames and smoke of candles had the magical power to deliver prayers and wishes to their moon goddess, Artemis.  They even baked round cakes to symbolize the moon and the candles were added to depict the reflected moonlight.  The Germans, who were arguably the first to celebrate children’s birthdays, also used a large candle in the center of a cake to symbolize “the light of life”.  Through the years, this tradition has held strong, so whether you’re sending or making good wishes…WISH BIG!
