One of our talented designers, Gwen, has a birthday coming up and she gave us a DIY tutorial for making giant display numbers (or letters!) for any party or celebration.
Even though I have a little over a month to go, my 30th birthday (eek!) is fast approaching! Taking a cue from Elizabeth’s tip to plan ahead for parties, I’ve already gotten a head start on some of my party decor. That’s right, with the help of my boyfriend, I’m throwing my own birthday soirée!
Since this is such a milestone birthday, instead of hiding my age, I decided to embrace it and really show it off. What better way then to display a giant 3-0?
How to make DIY giant display numbers:
- 2 large pieces (30″x40″) of matte board for each number/letter (cardboard or foam core works, too)
- 2-3 sheets of poster board for each number/letter, cut into 6″ wide strips (used for the sides in steps 4 & 5)
- Masking tape
- 8 small (8 oz.) foam coffee cups for each number/letter
- Hot glue gun
- Spray paint
- Drop cloth
After you’ve constructed your giant numbers/letters, I would suggest using spray paint since they’re so large! I found that my local arts & crafts store carried artist-quality spray paint in a huge variety of colors (vs. what I could find at my local hardware store)—you could also try an online art store if you’re looking for a specific shade.
I decided to paint my numbers two-tone with a couple of the colors I plan to use for my other party decorations. After putting down my drop cloth, I painted my numbers about 3/4 of the way down with my first color, and then started to lightly spray with my second color around the middle of my numbers. I avoided full coverage here, so that it would look like a fade from one color to the next, and increased my coverage as I moved down to prevent any show-through. The painting process was quick, and it didn’t take long at all to dry (15-20 minutes)!
