Dazzling Under the Sea Party Ideas That Will Make a Splash!

Themed parties are popping up everywhere these days, and right now, Under the Sea  is one of the most popular. So, if you’re thinking about throwing your own, and you’re looking for some under the sea party ideas, We’ve gathered a bunch of options for color, food, decorations, and activities/crafts.

Under the Sea Party Ideas

Preppy whale party via Kara’s Party Ideas. Mermaid in the ocean party via Kara’s Party Ideas. Under the sea mermaid party via Hostess with the Mostess. Ocean ONEderland via Eleven Cupcakes. Dazzling under the sea party via Events Inspired by Love.

The thing that works about each party featured above, is that they chose a color palette and stuck to it—you can see the colors in all the details of the party.

Using a specific color palette is an easy way to infuse a theme throughout your party (party planning like a pro tip #4). You can go all-out and match your food and drink colors to your decor, or keep it simple with a colored table cloth with color-coordinated paper plates and napkins like Eleven Cupcakes did with her Ocean ONEderland party.

To create your own palette, start with a shade of blue—this can range anywhere from a minty-teal to a bold, intense blue—and then add on from there. The ocean is full of tons of colors, so why not use them? Have fun adding a pop of red, orange, pink, or even purple to your shade (or shades) of blue!

Under the Sea party food ideas

Ocean water via Clean and Scentsible. Fruit of the sea via Catch My Party. Turtle cakes via Hip Hostess. Candy sushi via Catch My Party. Squid dogs via Delia Creates. Cupcake fish via Kara’s Party Ideas. Peanut butter and jelly-fish via Kara’s Party Ideas. Blue lagoons punch via Kara’s Party Ideas.

We love how people can make something as simple as a peanut butter and jelly sandwich into “sea” food. Peanut butter and jelly-fish sandwiches anyone? You can stick to simple ideas, like “sea water” bottles or arranging cupcakes into a fish (with the addition of what looks like cookies to create fins and the head). Or, you could create treats that are a little more intense, like candy sushi or turtle cakes.

There are so  many ways to get creative with food, and it was really hard to pick which ones to feature!  In addition to what We’ve shown above, we came across octodogs, mermaid kisses, sour seaweed, sea snails, clam cookies, and rock fish—just to name a few!

Still stuck on what to serve at your Under the Sea party? Craftiness is not Optional has a ton of party food options, all with cute under-the-sea names.

How to create an Under the Sea themed birthday party

Under the sea party decorations (for under $8) via Delia Creates. Jellyfish lanterns via Project Nursery. Balloon octopus via Great Gatherings and Parties. Make your own jellyfish via Scrapbooks Etc. Under the sea party via Kara’s Party Ideas.

Balloons and streamers can go a long way for an Under the Sea party—which is great, because both are inexpensive!

Use shades of green streamers and tape them to your walls for seaweed, or try multiple shades of blue to create a wall of water like the one at this Under the Sea party. Paper lanterns with ribbon or streamers hanging from the bottom are an easy way to create hanging jellyfish, and balloons are a fun way to make sea creatures or create “bubble” decorations.

If you’re looking for a super cost-effective way to decorate, check out this post from Delia Creates—she did all the decorations for her son’s birthday party for under $8!

Fun Under the Sea themed activities and games

Silly hermit crabs via Early Teacher. Painting seashells via Pink and Green Mama. Sand art via Hostess with the Mostess. Goldfish “fishing” via Kara’s Party Ideas. Octopus bean bag toss via Lizard and Ladybug. Beach towel mermaid tails via My Insanity.

The right games and activities can bring your theme to life, and they also go a long way in making kids feel like they’re really a part of it.

If you’re lucky enough to be throwing your party when the weather is warm, goldfish “fishing” and mermaid towels are great for summer parties, but if you’re stuck inside, you can still have a fun under the sea theme with crafts like silly hermit crabs, painted sea shells, or sand art.
