Rob Lowe’s Delightfully Ageless Take on Birthdays

What do you get when you mix Rob Lowe’s ageless charm with a nostalgic nod to classic TV? A birthday celebration like no other. In our latest SmashUps™ video ecard, the film and television icon delivers a witty, tongue-in-cheek take on birthdays — despite claiming to know nothing about them. The man *literally * never ages!

Inspired by Lowe’s famously youthful energy, we imagined a version of Rob so unfamiliar with aging that birthdays are a total mystery… until he discovers it’s YOUR big day. Channeling the vibe of ‘80s and ‘90s public service announcements, Rob takes a comically curious look at how birthdays work — from colorful balloons and pony rides to the deliciously sweet taste of birthday cake.

To bring this retro world to life, our talented Art Department transformed the American Greetings production stage into a “film set within a film set,” including vintage movie lights to give it a classic Hollywood look. On the day of the shoot, more than 30 crew members, including camera operators, sound mixers, and hair, makeup, and wardrobe artists, worked tirelessly to bring “The More You Lowe” to life. The result is a birthday greeting as timeless as Rob Lowe himself!

Before setting a new speed record for naming over 1,100 birthday recipients, we sat down with Rob to talk birthdays and what it’s really like starring in an American Greetings SmashUp™.

Q: Why did you want to make this birthday SmashUp™?

Rob: Birthdays are so fun. They're so important. They're a great way for people to come together and to be able to personally be able to wish my fans a birthday message specifically for them is such a fun, cool idea.

Q: When was the last time you let someone throw you a birthday party?

Rob: I love a surprise birthday party, but I'm very hard to surprise, so I don't get many of them. But I did just have an amazing birthday party that my wife, Cheryl, had for me, and it was amazing. Birthdays are really important. I’m dead serious. They're very important for us to take stock of all of the great things that we have in our lives and to look at what we've accomplished in our lives, and also to look forward to what we still want to do and what we are still going to be able to do. So I'm a big believer in taking a day to pat yourself on the back.

How do I send Celebrity SmashUps™?

Please be sure you are signed in as a member of American Greetings in order to send a Celebrity SmashUp. Once you are signed in, please follow the directions below:

1. Choose the Celebrity SmashUp you wish to send.

2. Select the options on Step 1 through Step 4 to customize your SmashUp.

3. Click on the “Preview” button on the SmashUp to preview before sending.

4. Click on the “Send” button after finalizing any customization options to proceed to the next step.

Step 2 involves creating your personal message. You will see an area to customize your message. Once you have typed your message, you can adjust the font style, size, color, bold and/or italicize. Highlight the text and make the changes you desire. Or, you can set the changes you desire before beginning to type. Click the “Share or Send” button to

continue and select how you would like to share your SmashUp. You can send your SmashUp via email, text message, post it to Facebook or copy the link to the SmashUp to share wherever you like!

If you selected to “Send via Email or Text,” you will proceed to Step 3, which will enable you to add the name and email address or phone number of the recipient and set the date for the SmashUp to be delivered. Here you can also select to add a digital gift that will be sent along with your SmashUp. Make your selections and click on the “Send Ecard” button to proceed to either the send confirmation page or the payment screen if you chose to add a gift.
